Performing

Exciting performance opportunities open up in upper elementary! In fourth grade, students will learn to play recorders as they continue to develop music notation literacy. I will send home order forms (around November) so students have the opportunity to purchase their own recorders to practice at home and bring to class. Recorders may not always sound lovely (believe me I know) but they're a great stepping stone for the wind instruments students may choose to play when they get to middle school.

Creating

In fourth grade, students get more opportunities to work in small groups on collaborative projects in music class. These projects could include creating rhythmic arrangements on percussion instruments, coming up with choreography for songs we've learned, songwriting, and composing movie music. We also have several desktop computers which allow us to explore producing music digitally.

Responding

In upper elementary we begin exploring different musical genres and artists in more depth in music class. Outside of music class students can participate in Mystery Musician challenges where they use clues to discover who the famous musician is each month.
